Acting
5/30-6/2

Designed for a variety of experience levels, this class develops skill and confidence as students analyze, rehearse, and perform scenes from plays written for young audiences. Each class investigates character development and acting technique through exploration of the director/actor relationship. Intensive scene work emphasizes the process of working with other actors to develop relationships onstage and find deeper meaning in the written word.

This class is part of the Specialty Series. These classes allow students to explore their interest in theatre in a more rigorous, yet highly supportive, environment while applying their learning to a specialized theatrical skill. This camp will culminate in a performance, or “sharing” on Friday in our main auditorium.

The Acting class works on:
• Understanding basic dramatic structure and a playwright’s intention
• Interpreting a scripted scene
• Memorizing lines
• Delivering dialogue with intention
• Using loud, clear voices
• Making motivated character decisions based on the dialogue of the scene
• Developing engaging characters and relationships
• Listening/Responding to other characters in a scene
• Connecting a director’s blocking to the action of a scene
• Understanding the director-actor relationship
• Learning stage directions and theatre vocabulary
• Working as an ensemble
• Exercising discipline as they work toward the goal of the show
• Having an absolute blast

NCT’s focus is always the healthy development of young people. We believe that the skills students learn in the drama classroom will serve them in their everyday lives as well as provide a foundation if they choose to pursue theatre studies and professional work.

All classes this summer are designed to be repeated. Like actors working on new scripts, students will explore a different story and will create new shows through exercises, games, and activities each week.

NCT offers free extended care for our families. Before Care opens at 7:30 am and After Care closes at 5:30 pm. You can add this service during registration or on a day-to-day basis during the camp week. Extended care consists of supervised unstructured free time. Students are welcome to bring a book or electronic device (that NCT is not responsible for). Additionally, NCT provides coloring sheets, board games, marble towers, etc for students who are interested. Also, during after care, we will also have a daily option of a G or PG-rated children’s movie playing as an activity choice.

*There may be two sections of this class. If participating with a friend/sibling (of the same age) and you would like them in the same class, please indicate this in the “friend request” question during registration. If you would prefer the sibling be in another section of the class (if possible), please indicate in that field.

Every Child Belongs Here

Our Drama School continually strives to learn and grow as the world changes in relation to access and inclusion practices. Here are just a few of the ways we accommodate every student.

Accessibility

NCT is completely wheelchair accessible, and we make accommodations for mobility and physical disabilities.

Informed Teachers

All Teaching Artists have continued training on inclusion, implicit bias, and trauma-informed practices.

Sensory Regulation

Classrooms have 'chill corners' where students can chill if activities become over-stimulating. Noise-canceling headphones and fidget tools are also available.

Attention Aids

Visual class schedules are utilized so students know what to expect each day. We also use visual time timers to help students with time-management.

Class Expectations

All classes utilize verbal as well as discussed written agreements. Students help with the creation of and thus understand classroom behavioral expectations.

Inclusive Nametags

Nametags are printed using the class color as well as listing the color names for colorblind students. Additionally, student and teacher pronouns are listed on all nametags.

A class Social Story can be found below to help navigate our classes. A Social Story is a tool to help improve a child’s understanding of expectations during an unfamiliar event and were originally designed to support neurodivergent students. However, this can be a useful tool for any student who is unsure about what to expect from a new experience. We share these resources to make NCT classes inclusive for ALL students.

We invite you to learn more about all of our accessibility and inclusion practices as well as our departmental teaching philosophy.

NCT Scholarships

We believe that all young people in Middle Tennessee deserve access to high-quality arts programming. NCT offers scholarships, ticket discounts and more.
