Advanced Theatre Voyagers provides students with a wide-ranging, holistic theatrical experience with the opportunity to work as playwrights, actors, directors, and designers. Under the guidance of their Teaching Artist, students will create an original adaptation of a myth, story or legend. The play they create is entirely their own from beginning to end. Students write the play, stage it, and rehearse it throughout the week.
Students will learn about the principles of acting, using their bodies, voices, and imaginations to step into the shoes of a scripted character. Students will begin to study the fundamentals of acting and characterization: motivation, objectives, and tactics– the same basic techniques students study in college courses! In addition to rehearsing the scenes, students will also engage in exercises and games designed to help develop and refine their skills. The Teaching Artist will give them individualized instruction and direction throughout the process. This camp will culminate in a performance, or “sharing” on Friday in our main auditorium.
Advanced Theatre Voyagers work on:
• Understanding dramatic structure of a story
• Improvising and writing effective dialogue
• Developing engaging characters and relationships as playwrights
• Make motivated character decisions based on the dialogue of the scene
• Learning stage directions and theatre vocabulary
• Understanding story structure and plot development
• Using loud, clear voices
• Understanding the director-actor relationship
• Imagining and creating soundscapes/stage pictures that develop the world of the play
• Working as an ensemble
• Exercising discipline as they work toward the goal of the show
• Having an absolute blast
Advanced Theatre Voyagers provides students with a solid introduction to the elements of drama as they learn how a play is structured, while giving them complete ownership of their creation.
NCT’s focus is always the healthy development of young people. We believe that the skills that students learn in the process of creative play will serve them in their everyday lives as well as provide a foundation if they choose to continue to more theatre work (which we hope they do!).
All classes this summer are designed to be repeated. Like actors working on new scripts, students will explore a different story and will create new shows through exercises, games, and activities each week.
NCT offers free extended care for our families. Before Care opens at 7:30 am and After Care closes at 5:30 pm. You can add this service during registration or on a day-to-day basis during the camp week. Extended care consists of supervised unstructured free time. Students are welcome to bring a book or electronic device (that NCT is not responsible for). Additionally, NCT provides coloring sheets, board games, marble towers, etc for students who are interested. Also, during after care, we will also have a daily option of a G or PG-rated children’s movie playing as an activity choice.
*There may be two sections of this class. If participating with a friend/sibling (of the same age) and you would like them in the same class, please indicate this in the “friend request” question during registration. If you would prefer the sibling be in another section of the class (if possible), please indicate in that field.
