Musical Theatre: Selections from DISNEY’S THE JUNGLE BOOK – 7/8-7/12

Students won’t need anything but “The Bare Necessities” for this adventurous week of camp! Exploring the songs and characters of Disney’s The Jungle Book, students will work as an ensemble to bring the jungle right onto the stage and build the essential skills to be emerging musical theatre stars! Join Mowgli, Baloo, and the rest of the jungle crew this week…and grown-ups, we promise the adventures won’t be too harrowing; no monkey business here!

After this camp, they will definitely be impressed with their new skills and ask, “What else can I do?!” Thankfully, there are three Musical Theatre camps for this age group at NCT this summer.

This camp will culminate in a performance, or “sharing” on Friday afternoon in our main auditorium. Students will present 1-3 songs from Disney’s The Jungle Book.

Musical Theatre Classes at this Age Range work on:
• Understanding basic movement to music
• Being introduced to proper breath control while singing
• Introductions to musical structure and melody
• Maintaining vocal volume while moving
• Learning stage directions and theatre vocabulary
• Understanding spacing (finding their window) during choreographed numbers
• Using loud, clear voices
• Moving as a specific character
• Filling a song with clear and distinct character choices
• Working as an ensemble
• Exercising discipline as they work toward the goals of the presentation
• Having an absolute blast

NCT’s focus is always the healthy development of young people. We believe that the skills that students learn while participating in the process of theatre will serve them in their everyday lives as well as provide a foundation if they choose to continue to more advanced work (which we hope they do!).

NCT offers free extended care for our families. Before Care opens at 7:30 am and After Care closes at 5:30 pm. You can add this service during registration or on a day-to-day basis during the camp week. Extended care consists of supervised unstructured free time. Students are welcome to bring a book or electronic device (that NCT is not responsible for). Additionally, NCT provides coloring sheets, board games, marble towers, etc for students who are interested. Also, during after care, we will also have a daily option of a G or PG-rated children’s movie playing as an activity choice.

Classrooms have ‘calm corners’ where students can regulate if activities become over-stimulating. Noise-reducing headphones and fidget tools are also available. All students also have access to visit our Sensory Room with a staff member.

Attention Aids

Visual class schedules are utilized so students know what to expect each day. We also use visual time timers to help students with time-management.

Class Expectations

All classes utilize verbal as well as discussed written agreements. Students help with the creation of and thus understand classroom behavioral expectations.

Inclusive Nametags

Nametags are printed using the class color as well as listing the color names for colorblind students. Additionally, student and teacher pronouns are listed on all nametags.

A class Social Story can be found below to help navigate our classes. A Social Story is a tool to help improve a child’s understanding of expectations during an unfamiliar event and were originally designed to support neurodivergent students. However, this can be a useful tool for any student who is unsure about what to expect from a new experience. We share these resources to make NCT classes inclusive for ALL students.

We invite you to learn more about all of our accessibility and inclusion practices as well as our departmental teaching philosophy.

NCT Scholarships

We believe that all young people in Middle Tennessee deserve access to high-quality arts programming. NCT offers scholarships, ticket discounts and more.
