On Camera! Fast Forward to the Future – 6/10-6/14

Ever wonder what the future looks like? Do cars fly? Or maybe we finally figured out the secret to teleportation! Find out the answers to these burning questions and more in a fun filled week of time travel! “On Camera: Fast Forward to the Future” seamlessly blends elements of theatre, visual art, and creative writing to craft a compelling and dynamic final piece of work that you and your young person can enjoy together!

With their Teaching Artist, students in the class will collaboratively produce their own original short film, utilizing photography, videography, and imagination, centered around a chosen theme. At the culmination of this creative journey, students and grown ups will receive access to a downloadable link of the final short film that the students have created and brought to life.

*Please allow up to 2 weeks after the final class for the short film to be edited and sent to students and grown ups. Due to the nature of this class, there will NOT be an in-person sharing performance at the end of the week.

Similar to our Voyagers series, “On Camera” focuses on teaching very important basic acting skills, while also incorporating the art of digital storytelling. Students will learn to use the three primary tools of an actor, the voice, body, and imagination, to create characters. They will learn how to take their own creative impulses and ideas and commit to those ideas through the creation of a play as an ensemble.

Additionally, the students will develop collaborative and social skills that allow them to contribute personally while honoring the ideas of their cast-mates.

NCT’s focus is always the healthy development of young people. We believe that the skills that students learn in the process of play-building will serve them in their everyday lives as well as provide a foundation if they choose to continue to more advanced work (which we hope they do!).

NCT offers free extended care for our families. Before Care opens at 7:30 am and After Care closes at 5:30 pm. You can add this service during registration or on a day-to-day basis during the camp week. Extended care consists of supervised unstructured free time. Students are welcome to bring a book or electronic device (that NCT is not responsible for). Additionally, NCT provides coloring sheets, board games, marble towers, etc for students who are interested. Also, during after care, we will also have a daily option of a G or PG-rated children’s movie playing as an activity choice.

*There may be two sections of this class. If participating with a friend/sibling (of the same age) and you would like them in the same class, please indicate this in the “friend request” question during registration. If you would prefer the sibling be in another section of the class (if possible), please indicate in that field.

Every Child Belongs Here

Our Drama School continually strives to learn and grow as the world changes in relation to access and inclusion practices. Here are just a few of the ways we accommodate every student.

Accessibility

NCT is completely wheelchair accessible, and we make accommodations for mobility and physical disabilities.

Informed Teachers

All Teaching Artists have continued training on inclusion, implicit bias, and trauma-informed practices.

Sensory Regulation

Classrooms have ‘calm corners’ where students can regulate if activities become over-stimulating. Noise-reducing headphones and fidget tools are also available. All students also have access to visit our Sensory Room with a staff member.

Attention Aids

Visual class schedules are utilized so students know what to expect each day. We also use visual time timers to help students with time-management.

Class Expectations

All classes utilize verbal as well as discussed written agreements. Students help with the creation of and thus understand classroom behavioral expectations.

Inclusive Nametags

Nametags are printed using the class color as well as listing the color names for colorblind students. Additionally, student and teacher pronouns are listed on all nametags.

A class Social Story can be found below to help navigate our classes. A Social Story is a tool to help improve a child’s understanding of expectations during an unfamiliar event and were originally designed to support neurodivergent students. However, this can be a useful tool for any student who is unsure about what to expect from a new experience. We share these resources to make NCT classes inclusive for ALL students.

We invite you to learn more about all of our accessibility and inclusion practices as well as our departmental teaching philosophy.

NCT Scholarships

We believe that all young people in Middle Tennessee deserve access to high-quality arts programming. NCT offers scholarships, ticket discounts and more.
